How to Prepare for Your Documentary Family Session
A documentary family session captures your family actually being together during an activity you would be doing together anyway.
Your home or space
If we're shooting at home, your house doesn't need to be perfect. Clear away visible clutter from the main space, but don't over-clean or stage anything — I want your home to look like your family's actual life.
What to wear
No need to match. Choose clothing that's comfortable and feels authentic to each person in your family. Whatever you would typically wear to do the activity we're documenting. The one guideline: steer away from neon colors and large graphics or logos, since they pull focus and tend to look dated quickly in photographs. Soft, neutral tones let the moment and your family stay the focus, not the outfit.
Choosing your activity
Since I will document your family doing something real together, the most important prep is picking an activity that's true to you: a trip to the park, a hike, a swim, playtime at home, cooking or baking together, reading, dancing in the living room, whatever your family actually does. It can be something you'd do anyway on a normal day, or something planned specifically for the session — either works, as long as it's something your family would enjoy doing together.
What actually happens during the session
I'll give you minimal prompts if something needs a small adjustment — better light, repositioning slightly — but otherwise I stay in the background, observing and photographing your family as you move through the activity naturally.
The best mindset going in
Allow yourself to be in the moment and enjoy the time with your family. Let kids be kids, and let the day go the way it goes — including any mess or unexpected moments. Those are usually where the best images come from.
